(Before It's News)

Image..What is a REDD window you might ask?  A REDD Window is ring-fenced funding for forest protection. By this we mean money in a fund that is specifically designated for forests and nothing else. Greenpeace want this REDD window to be established in the Green Climate Fund.  Now you might be scratching your head and asking what that is because following the UNFCCC negotiations is confusing and full of TLA’s (three letter acronyms) that make it incredibly difficult to follow. In Copenhagen, yep way back then, political leaders agreed to establish a Green Climate Fund (GCF) to provide financing to  help developing countries to reduce (or mitigate) their emissions and adapt to climate change. Greenpeace wants to see REDD have its own allocated pot of money to ensure that REDD is implemented in the best possible way, for emissions reductions and for the people dependent on forests for their livelihoods.

Forests are home to millions of people, and store more biodiversity and carbon than any other terrestrial biome in the world. REDD will have a significant impact on the livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities, as well as biodiversity. In order to safeguard that REDD actually delivers on its promises to reduce GHG emissions we need to ensure there is adequate money.

The Green Climate Fund is the most obvious place for a REDD Window, in addition to the currently proposed windows for mitigation and adaptation. But at the moment it is not certain that parties will bring the Green Climate Fund to work at all!

We are calling on Parties, particularly those who are in favour of a REDD Window or Forest Fund, to find the most appropriate way in Durban to ensure that significant ring-fenced funding is made available to a forest fund that stops deforestation, protects biodiversity, and fully respects the rights and livelihoods of indigenous peoples and local communities.
