South Carolina earthquake 2014 causes slight damage in Edgefield

M 4.1 moderate earthquake shakes South Carolina today, the U.S. Geological Survey reported.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, the quake's epicenter was located 12 km WNW of Edgefield. It was 3.0 miles deep.

The tremors were also felt in much of northern Georgia and even in southeastern Tennessee.

Slight damage has been reported in the floor of Edgefield County Hospital.

According to The Christian Science Monitor, South Carolina earthquake 2014 may have been caused by the subterranean breakdown of the ancient Appalachian Mountains.

The largest-ever inland South Carolina earthquake occurred in 1916 measuring 5.1 in magnitude.
