More than 100 Winter Olympians have signed a letter urging world leaders to do something about climate change. They are certainly free to take up a cause. But it should be a cause based on a real problem.
It’s unfortunate, but the Olympic Games have almost always been politicized. Often the politics are played by those outside the arena who want to exploit a built-in worldwide audience provided by athletes who train a lifetime to get what’s often that one chance to be a gold medalist.
But this time we have a group of 105 Olympians, led by U.S. skier Andrew Newell, placing politics ahead of competition. These athletes want world leaders to “recognize climate change by reducing emissions, embracing clean energy and preparing a commitment to a global agreement at the (United Nations) Framework Convention on Climate Change in Paris 2015.”
