The newly created online publication, The Intercept, may very well be the future of what is possible in journalism. This news media outlet presently has a very simple and nondescript design, but its substance is substantial. First Look Media and Glenn Greenwald are helping to launch this revolutionary digital magazine, which may begin to redefine how we get our information and news.
One of the goals of this internet publication is to aggressively focus on significant issues, ranging from pervasive government surveillance and privacy, to civil liberties and the media. First Look Media is also planning to build a second online news outlet later this year, which will largely focus on our expanding global economic crisis, as well as the political corruption that sustains our dysfunctional systems.
Strength through Collaboration
The fierce and fearless Greenwald, who helped expose widespread NSA spying, was the first journalist to join the project, and he also functions as one of the co-editors. The former Guardian reporter told the publication that having the opportunity to collaboratively construct a news organization from the ground up will allow him to successfully dissolve the entrenched hierarchical infrastructure systems that have traditionally existed within newsrooms:
”We want to avoid this hierarchical, top-down structure where editors are bosses and obstacles to being published. We are trying to make it much more collaborative. Our journalists have a variety of tools to make their writing better and one of them is the editor. We also want journalists to help to hire editors.
…Journalism becomes ossified and corrupted where it is just a monologue, speaking down to your readers in a passive format. I see [public comments] as a vital form of accountability.”
First Look Media, the company behind The Intercept, has been funded by eBay billionaire Pierre Omidyar; and although the new media organization is only in its nascent formation, they have already managed to assemble some of the finest and bravest journalists currently working. Contributors include Laura Poitras and Jeremy Scahill, as well as former Rolling Stone investigative reporter, Matt Taibbi—journalists who have broken some of the most important and transformative stories in modern history.
Be sure to check out the explosive information that is being published by Greenwald and The Intercept, and watch how this cooperative news experiment evolves over time. I am most excited to see what is revealed by the new journalism world order created by the combined collaborative forces of these investigative geniuses.
