Typhoon Neoguri in Okinawa kills 1, more than 500,000 urged to evacuate

Typhoon Neoguri has claimed life of a person and urged more than 500,000 people to evacuate in Okinawa region of Japan.

More than 50,000 households in Okinawa have lost power.

Japan Meteorological Agency has issued an emergency storm surge warning early Tuesday for Miyako island and adjacent islets in Japan's southernmost prefecture of Okinawa.

Typhoon Neoguri is expected to make landfall at Kyushu area in southwest Japan on Thursday.

According to the US's National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Typhoon Neoguri is expected to be the most powerful typhoon to hit Okinawa island in Japan in 15 years.

The typhoon was named by the Republic of Korea. Neoguri means “raccoon dog.”
