New low in Idaho for labels that go No GMO

(Before It's News)

The Pundit has been undertaking an extensive fact finding study tour of restaurants and food purveyors in the American North-West.

This tour has taken him to a delightful farmer's market in Davis, California.  There he witnessed excellent product safety management. In the Saturday Davis farmer's market, artisanal cheese was displayed on a table on top of a layer on ice, protected from the sun by a tent. Top marks to the savvy Davis organic cheese merchant for good food safety practices.

Later on in this study tour, the Pundit took the opportunity to sup at Ted's Montana Steakhouse in pleasant downtown Bozeman. Great service was combined gracious western ambiance. Ted's bison stew was truly satisfying, but disappointingly the gin and tonic with the meal was bit lacking in the satisfying bitterness which the Pundit expects with his G and Ts.

But when he got to Sandpoint, Idaho, the Pundit was gobsmacked.

Supermarket in Sandpoint, Idaho

While checking out the town's main supermarket for the latest trends in food marketing, he was passing by the large organic food section, and chanced upon the refrigerated fresh milk vending cabinet. There he was confronted this astonishing sign:

The labels on the raw milk containers were even more confronting:

This deliberate avoidance of pasteurisation and absence of customer warnings is complete incompetence and negligence by both the store and the dairy farm. Not only are standards methods for eliminating pathogenic E. coli, Listeria and Salmonella bacterial dangers are being omitted during milk processing, the label misleadingly touts the absence of 'GMOs' — that cause no detectable harm in food and which in any case are not present in convention liquid milk.

Louis Pasteur would turn in his grave.

One of the many good articles at Raw Milk Facts features the advice of CDC's Rob Tauxe
Quote:

The role of raw milk and other unpasteurized dairy products in the transmission of infectious diseases is well documented. Pasteurization is the process of heating milk to a high enough temperature for a long enough time to kill disease-causing bacteria. Raw milk was recognized as a source of severe infections over 100 years ago, and pasteurization of milk to prevent these infections is one of the public health triumphs of the 20th century. Pathogens such as Escherichia coli O157, Campylobacter jejuni, and Salmonella can contaminate milk during the milking process because they are shed in the feces of healthy-looking dairy animals, including cows and goats. Infection with these pathogens can cause severe, long-term consequences, such as hemolytic uremic syndrome, which can result in kidney failure, and Guillan-Barré syndrome, which can result in paralysis. These infections are particularly serious in those who are very young, very old, or who have impaired immune systems. They can be fatal…

The store in Sandpoint should share this information with it's customers and display prominent safety warnings. Better still, get rid of the raw milk from the shop.
