Nimonik Offers New Checklist Designed to Reduce Shutdown System Failures at Oil and Gas Production Facilities

In response to a number of failures of high-level shutdown systems (HLSSs) at oil and gas facilities, the Alberta Energy Regulator (AER) has introduced the High-Level Shutdown System Risk Assessment Checklist.
The checklist is designed to establish best practices for HLSS inspections to prevent failures that can result in releases. Operators that have a flare stack on site, and that have a water body within 100 metres of the well or facility, should know that a failure at their site may pose a significant risk to the environment and are expected to derive the most benefit from using the checklist.
If a HLSS fails, the AER, which regulates the oil and gas industry in Alberta, may request copies of completed checklists from operators to see whether the operator tried adequately to prevent the incident. While the checklist is not explicitly required, its use is strongly recommended and operators that use the checklist are expected to keep completed copies for inspection.
