Read aguanomics http://www.aguanomics.com/ for the world’s best analysis of the politics and economics of water Whew! Only 50 posts in that month… Here are a few lot that are still interesting.
Things I still think people should think about
- Travelblog: Salty Showers – too many tourists are bad for the locals’ environment
- Poll Results — Shoot the politicians! for water problems. The technology is known and works
- Fast Food Nation — The Review You lose yourself when you lose your connection to food
- Weapons of the Weak — The Review – peasants have means of coping with abuse from the powerful (hear that Trump?)
- The Corporate State, i.e., Citizens United, was a major blow against one man, one vote.
- Water lawyer bleg – rights may work better than regulation to reduce pollution
- Travelblog: Death and social insurance, i.e., rich people kill animals and share the meat
- Be careful what you ask for – California facing drought then floods (sound familiar?)
- Net loss pork – voters need to SUBTRACT the tax burden as a cost of pork-spending before they get excited about the pork that goes to them!
- Water cops waste $75,000 each – phony conservation (like a phony Wall won’t fix migration)
- Climate Debt – that’s the concept that “winners” (richer countries) are unwilling to recognize, as it would imply they owe a debt to the poorer countries whose “share of climate” they’ve spent.
- Real Estate and the 4th World – how the fall of the USSR and financial crisis are linked
- The Disaster in Haiti (in 2010) was made worse by corrupt government. No change there
- 8 Water Myths – absolutely!
- Was China wrong? Yes, about policy, but no, about the benefits of fewer children
- Holy Cow! Non-beneficial use? Are “decorative fountains” a waste of water? No, says the state (read the 2012 decision — with lots of useful law, engineering and economic discussion — at the link). That same broad definition of “beneficial use” should allow water markets.
- Farming politicians instead of crops if you want to make easy profits
- Travelblog: Islam in Indonesia. The problem is not religion but intolerance
- Corruption in Context – Transparency International writes about water and corruption
- Travelblog: Jakarta Those problems are worse.
- Privatization of water is GOOD (if well regulated, which is ALSO true for public water supplies)
- Priests and Programmers — The Review wherein priests own experts on irrigation
- Communism in North Korea is all about bad incentives
- Elephants on their desks Supply side water managers (Vegas, LA) are missing the point
- Looking forward to 2010: “Civic debate will require that right-wing and left-wing nutjobs debate each other, instead of talking in an echo chamber. Politicians should be held accountable for their broken promises as well as their (often contradictory) pandering to interest groups.” Well, that hope failed pretty hard (watch this video on Trump’s first week)
Things on which I’ve changed my mind (or which have changed themselves!)
- Distance learning about economics, politics and the environment – I couldn’t get the time or “upvotes” to run a MOOC on these topics (many people still watch my lectures on YouTube), but I may go back to that in the future (not before 2018)!
