IMPORTANT: Please contact your MP – The Lords MUST Think Again About BREXIT

(Before It's News)

09/03/2017
On Wednesday, the House of Lords voted, by a large majority, to amend the Article 50 Bill requiring it to be sent back to the House of Commons, in a process known as ping-pong. MPs will now vote on the 2 amendments from the Lords – probably on Monday, March 13th.

One of the amendments would give a ‘meaningful vote’ for MPs on the final Brexit deal, and the other would guarantee EU citizens the right to remain in the UK post-Brexit.

The Prime Minister has already stressed EU citizens’ rights will be top of her agenda in the negotiations. EU leaders such as Chancellor Angela Merkel are the only ones holding up an agreement on this.

To get the best Brexit deal the Prime Minister must show she is prepared to walk away – something David Cameron was clearly not prepared to do. Requiring Theresa May to hold a vote in Parliament on the final deal would effectively tie one arm behind her back in negotiations and increase uncertainty for business.

These amendments are clearly delaying tactics. Brexit-blocking Lords and some other Remoaners are hoping the Great British Public will change their mind about Brexit, opening the door to a second referendum. The public knew what they were voting for on June 23rd and that’s what they will get. Referendum after referendum would do nothing other than further erode the public’s trust in politics and politicians.

Once Article 50 is triggered – hopefully by the end of this month – there is no going back.

To ensure the Lords’ amendments are voted down, we need your urgent help. We are asking all supporters of Get Britain Out – their friends and as many people as possible – to e-mail their MP to ensure they vote against these delaying amendments. We have produced a draft letter you may wish to send below.

Feel free to revise the letter – it would be better if you can do so. You could even include whether you voted for them at the last election. Or you could arrange a meeting with your MP in person – MPs hold their surgeries in their constituencies, usually on Fridays and Saturdays.

Dear [Insert Your MP’s Name Here],

I am writing to encourage you to vote to delete the amendments to the European Union (Notification of Withdrawal) Bill which have been adopted by the House of Lords.

The original, unamended Article 50 Bill honours the will of the Great British Public as expressed in the EU Referendum last year, and now has the force of our elected representatives behind it. As one of your constituents, I am writing to you personally, as I believe it would be an affront to democracy if the unelected House of Lords were allowed to succeed with diluting this legislation.

Neither of these amendments have any merit. I do not oppose giving EU citizens the right to remain here after Brexit, but I object to letting the EU use our expats as bargaining chips in Brexit negotiations. The Prime Minister has already reassured us this issue will be at the top of her agenda. The Government shouldn’t have to negotiate with Brussels with one hand tied behind its back.

Likewise, I do not want Parliament to be given a so-called ‘meaningful vote’ on the final deal – something which would only encourage the EU to give us a bad deal in the hope Parliament then forces us to stay in the EU, or embrace a ‘soft’ Brexit which ignores the Referendum mandate.

I’m sure you appreciate the case is clear. It’s the Lords who should have to think again – not the Commons. Please vote to delete these amendments and send the original, unamended Bill back to the Lords. I am one of the 17.4 million people across the United Kingdom who voted ‘Leave’ in the EU Referendum, and I would be grateful for your support for the Referendum result.

Yours sincerely,
[ADD YOUR NAME HERE]

Thank you very much for taking the time to do this as it is the most important issue of our generation.

Best wishes,
