(Before It's News)

Welcoming new neighbors with unwelcome gifts is something you want to avoid. Find out the items that they would actually love to get from you.

We’ve all experienced it. We’ve been the “new neighbor” before. And more often than not, the first day in town is awkward.

I still remember the day I moved into my subdivision. I spent most of the afternoon unpacking and arranging our things. Later that evening, I heard a knock on the door. When I opened it, there were three women with pots of food and other gifts in their hands. While the experience was a pleasant one and I appreciated their kind gestures, I was left with things that I did not need or want. Maybe, you’ve experienced this, too.

The bottom line is that nobody wants to receive a welcoming gift that would just become an addition to the pile they have in the attic. The next time you have a new neighbor, you might want to consider giving them one of these useful gifts:

1. Town Guide

It’s true that one can always rely on Google Maps and GPS to find their way around town. However, there’s only so much the internet knows. Give your new neighbor a personalized town guide and highlight important places they may want to visit or find useful. You might mark shops that serve the freshest meat, vegetables, or fruits. It will also be useful if you trace shortcuts not known in Google Map.

2. Wine with Personalized Greeting

Wine is one of the most common housewarming gifts. It’s convenient and consumable, so you can say that it’s perfect for the occasion. Still, you might want to spice things up a bit. You can make your custom home wine label to greet the new neighbors with their names or with a nice welcome message.

3. Cleaning Gift Basket

Now, this is something anyone would love to have. A lot of movers don’t pack cleaning gear with them. They would just buy new cleaning supplies from the town’s store. That is why giving them cleaning items is a very practical and often appreciated choice. After all, they’d have to clean the house after unpacking their things and this will help your new neighbor get started with acclimating to their new home. Try to buy eco-friendly cleaning products and pack them all in one gift basket.

4. Soup in a Jar

Movers usually don’t have enough time to prepare their own dinner. Bring them soup to save them the trouble of ordering fast food. However, don’t put the soup in pots. Why? They’ll have trouble washing it and sending it to you the next day. Be considerate and put your soup in a jar that they can keep instead. It’ll be the most convenient for them.

5. Houseplant

Every house deserves to get a bit of greenery. Give your new neighbor a houseplant in a pot. It’s better if it’s something that would not trigger allergies and could be displayed inside the house. Movers usually don’t have time to set their garden in the first month, so they’ll have to put the plant inside for the time being. Stick a handwritten note on the pot and it’s good to go.

Final Thoughts

There’s no need to rack your brain thinking of a perfect housewarming gift. Simple ones with utility function will be more than enough and will make new neighbors feel welcome in their new neighborhood.
