New Conditions is a solo exhibition by Swiss artist GINA FOLLY. New Conditions is currently taking place in the gallerist’s private apartment in the center of Rome. Interested in ‘the social phenomena of our growing wellness culture’ according to the press release, GINA FOLLY layers a melange of objects derived from a certain lifestyle ideology that reflect the last nine months she spent in the Italian city, to create a subtle and yet immersive exhibition.
By entering the flat, the visitor is welcomed by two large vertical prints depicting the hands of the artist, which lead the viewer to the main space of the exhibition, where the floor has been covered with a skin-toned carpet. Onto it, a ‘handmade reproduction of an often-customized cooling device that is used by the Roman street dealers in order to keep their choice of exotic fruits and coconut pieces fresh’. The balcony features a recurrent element of FOLLY‘s work called Magic Box and which consists of a polycarbonate box used in zoos to simulate a natural environment for apes that have always lived in captivity. Deprived of context and function, these two latter objects take on the aura of sculpture. Eventually the air is filled with the smell of green tea.
Thanks to its title as well as the domestic location, New Conditions seems to question hypothetical factors that can affect the way in which people live or work, especially with regard to their well-being.
