I started doodling (and posting it to the internet) regularly in 2008/2009—the Flickr salad days. I had just finished undergrad, and was taking time off from my job to recover from a knee surgery. I was alone and on bed rest, so I just filled up sketchbooks and posted them online to try to connect with new people. After that, “doodling” turned into illustrating and I'm now a full time illustrator. I still keep a pocket sketchbook with me at all times to doodle. Doodling is a no-pressure brain dump for me. If any weird image or phrase that gets stuck in my head, I can exorcise it onto the page. I can also jot down ideas for future illustrations and quickly practice new techniques. For me, doodling is a compulsion, and I can’t imagine ever stopping. — Josh LaFayette Website Twitter Instagram This is part of a new and on-going (weekly) series where I'm inviting artists to share some recent sketchbook spreads and answer one question: Why do you doodle? It's a simple ask, but I believe it can reveal a tremendous amount of insight into a habit so many of us creatives share. Please comment below and share your own thoughts on the topic. Be sure to follow these artists for more inspiration and check back next week for a new one in the series. — OKAT
