EarthDance is a hands-on, organic farm school based in the community known to most people in the U.S. only as the site of the fatal shooting of Michael Brown by a police officer last year and the rioting that followed the decision by a grand jury not to indict the officer.
Founding Director Molly Rockamann is on a mission to not only educate people about locally grown food, but shape the lives of those who volunteer to work at the inner-city organic farm she operates.
“Until we have localized food production for everybody, I don’t think we’re going to get to a point where we can have real food security,” Rockamann told members of the St. Louis AgriBusiness Club. “I firmly believe that in order to have food security we need to have land security. We need more farmers on the land, for more folks to have access to fertile land. Each year America loses more than one million acres of farmland.”
Retired NFL linebacker Will Witherspoon, who also spoke to the club, has worked with Rockamann on various projects. He is convinced of the value of introducing people — especially children — to the joys of locally grown food.
