Karen Washington is an activist and farmer. She is co-owner of Rise & Root Farm in Orange County, New York, and cofounder of Black Urban Growers (BUGS) in the Bronx, New York.
Chellie Pingree lives on the island of North Haven in Maine, where she is a longtime organic farmer. She has represented Maine’s First District in Congress since 2009 and is an outspoken advocate for federal policies that better support sustainable farming.
Michael Pollan is the author of several best-selling books on food and farming, including The Omnivore’s Dilemma, In Defense of Food, Food Rules, and, most recently, Cooked. He teaches journalism at the University of California, Berkeley.
Brian Richter is the chief scientist for the Global Water Program of The Nature Conservancy, where, for more than twenty-five years, he has consulted on more than 120 water projects around the world. He teaches a course on water sustainability at the University of Virginia and is the author of Chasing Water: A Guide for Moving from Scarcity to Sustainability and, with Sandra Postel, of Rivers for Life: Managing Water for People and Nature.
Joel Salatin co-owns Polyface Farm with his family in Swoope, Virginia, producing pastured livestock and servicing six thousand families and fifty restaurants via relationship marketing. The author of ten books and a frequent conference speaker, he advocates aggressively for food-choice freedom and local food systems. The farm has an open-door, 24/7/365 policy to showcase regenerative agricultural methods.
Allan Savory: A former wildlife biologist, farmer, and politician, Zimbabwean-born Allan Savory made a significant breakthrough in the 1960s in understanding what was causing the degradation and desertification of the world’s grassland ecosystems and worked with farmers, eventually on four continents, to develop sustainable solutions. In 2009 he cofounded the Savory Institute in Boulder, Colorado, to promote large-scale restoration of the world’s grasslands through Holistic Management. In 2003 he was awarded Australia’s International Banksia Award for the “person doing the most for the environment on a global scale,” and in 2010 he won the Buckminster Fuller Challenge for work that has “significant potential to solve humanity’s most pressing problems.”
Alice Waters is a chef, food activist, and the founder and owner of Chez Panisse Restaurant in Berkeley, California. In 1995 she founded the Edible Schoolyard Project. She went on to conceive and help create the Yale Sustainable Food Project at Yale University and the Rome Sustainable Food Project at the American Academy in Rome. In 2015 she was awarded the National Humanities Medal by President Barack Obama. Waters is the author of fifteen books, including New York Times best sellers The Art of Simple Food I and II and The Edible Schoolyard: A Universal Idea.
Richard Wiswall has been farming Cate Farm in East Montpelier, Vermont, since 1981, growing certified-organic vegetables, herbs, and flowers. He enjoys helping others with the business side of their farms and is the author of The Organic Farmer’s Business Handbook.
