How Old Is Too Old to Trick or Treat?

(Before It's News)

Halloween has passed and its time to reflect on the year ‘s showstoppers as well as some of the changes we are seeing in this advanced digital era. I did not go trick or treating with my 10 year old brother-in-law this year, because I decided that I wanted to give out candy instead. As an educator, I try to promote the healthy stuff without going overboard. I don’t give out chocolates, I refuse to hand out sugary candy, and I definitely do not want to spoil kids with sweet-tooth lollipops. So this year I decided to give out sugar-free jelly beans and 75% of the kids that came to my door were happy to see that Jelly Beans were on the men.

It actually surprised me to see the number of kids (13+) going trick or treating this year. As soon as they got some treats, they would utilize their cell phones to message their friends about which house to go and not to go. This was one observation I made this year; a trending change in the last few year.

I think we have come a long way since the 1990s.  Kids in the 1990s would egg the house that gave out no candy or bad tasting candy. Kids no longer do that these days because they have cell phones as well as Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter accounts. All it takes is a # and your address to give you a horrible reputation.

So this evening I sat down with my wife and mother-in-law and asked them the  all-important question: Is my brother-in-law getting to old for trick or treating? My mother in law and my wife both agreed that children should enjoy this holiday while they still have the chance. I agreed to some extent. I went to the Party Storeshop yesterday and there 200+ adults in the store buying costumes for themselves. I went to McDonald’s to buy coffee and the employee at the front counter was wearing a revealing Halloween costume.  I then went to the Library and all of the staff were in their costumes. One even dressed as a serial killer with a big box of cereal and knife sticking out. So if adults can have fun, why can’t kids as well?

So let’s get to the bottom of this age-old question. How old is too old for trick treating? I say that if you are old enough to tweet, you’re too old to trick or treat! Party with friends, go see a haunted house, but do not go begging for candies – house to house!
