Indian company Bharat Electronics has launched a low-budget tablet called Bharat Slate, running Android 2.2. The tablet only costs $70 (INR 3000) and it has been designed for the Indian Ministry of Rural Development, which will use the tablets for poverty survey around the country. The tablet also has a solar powered battery and it has been created especially for the Indian population. Although the tablet won’t leave its originating country, a success in India would be enough, since the country’s population is of more than 1 billion.
It isn’t the first time we hear about an Indian cheap tablet. Kapil Sibal has previously launched an even cheaper one, a $35 tablet (to read attempt) called Sakshat.
There are no specific details about the Bharat Slate tablet, such as RAM, processor or storage space. Indian source Hindu Business Line has claimed that the tablet could be capable of storing and syncing the data in real time with a server.
2000 Bharat Slate units have been manufactured in a record time of only 4.5 months for the Ministry of Rural Development. Although not very attractive, given the price and the shortcomings, the tablet does its work in helping the poor population of India.
Bharat Electronic Chairman and Managing Director, Ashwani Datt plans to come up with another model for students and common consumers, at an acceptable price. But the company may have even bigger plans with their tablet that apparently has a great potential “It was a very big challenge, of doing something extremely good, designing it in 4.5 months and at a low price. The tablet competes well with anything in the world market”, said Datt.
