(Before It's News)

Of all the buzz words capturing airwaves, there’s nothing quite like SEO. Search Engine Optimization refers to a set of words or terms being included in your articles, website or business page for better visibility when content is searched.

Ultimately, the idea is to show up at the top of the food chain(read, search results) and not somewhere in the end, the next page or even the middle. If typical user behavior is to not go beyond the first two or three results a search engine throws up, then it is essential that you stay there.

This is easier said than done. The onus now is not only on gaining that top position but also in ensuring you are not penalized for doing the same.  Popular search engines like Google are cracking down hard on SEO, having come under fire itself from many an internet watchdog.

The company has been accused of manipulating results to benefit its own products and it has also been besieged by complaints from small and big companies to look into unfair dominance of their competitors. In times like these, Google has resorted to changing its algorithms that run its searches making it a tad difficult to keep yourself in the top ten. Here are a few ways that might help-

  • Connect to pages that count

    How-Google-Determines-PageRank

We’re talking education or government sites. Search engines love .edu and .gov and you can generate buzz just by asking young kids and employees to link up to your site. Make interesting offers to members of the teaching profession or government employees. Find link partners that tie into your business and leverage that as well.

  • Three-way

At one point of time it was enough to have good quality one-way links on your site- they generated quite a lot of traffic. But now, it is the world of the three-way link. This means using three websites, each connecting to other-a to b to c. The third site seems to function independently and so for Google, this comes across as a single link. Do this if you own the sites and you need to really know your SEO. This is an advanced tool and is very useful, but you need to know your stuff.

  • Blogs

A blog that has high visibility is where you should be. Posting on a high page ranking blog with links to your site is useful and an effective way to drive traffic to your site.

  • Make a bargain

Nothing’s free except advice these days and when you find a page with a great ranking, it won’t be enough to approach them for permission to link up. You will need to offer them something in return, by way of a service or freebie products. You should seriously consider this keeping in mind the long term benefits.

  • Pay if required

Yahoo has a directory where you need to pay to be registered. This is for its commercial listing. Non- commercial works too but it takes a while and you may not also get lucky. If you’re paying top dollar, do ensure your site is well executed and has great performance across the board.

  • Keep the old

An oldie is a goodie as far as search engines go because it shows them lineage and longevity. So keep the links from an older time and when looking for links, look for long term staying rather than short terms bursts of activity.

SEO offers many benefits to your page, so make sure you use it wisely and well.
