(Before It's News)

Mozilla is planning to enter the mobile operating systems market with its own product. During MWC 2013 exhibition that is being held in Barcelona the developer of a popular Internet browser presented the first commercial version of a mobile platform Forefox OS. Firefox OS is based completely on the open web standards and requires far less hardware power from smartphones than any of the current mobile operating systems.

According to the company’s statement, Mozilla has signed partnership agreements with 18 mobile providers, which will offer their users smartphones that run under Firefox OS. Among these providers are China Unicom, Hutchison, Etisalat, Telecom Italia, Deutsche Telekom and Telenor. Some of the companies already stated that they’re going to offer their subscribers Firefox smartphones as soon as the latter will hit the market.

Firefox-based smartphones will be produced by four manufacturers: ZTE, Alcatel, Huawei and LG. All models will be provided with Qualcomm processors. According to the Mozilla’s senior vice-president on products Jay Sullivan, the first gadgets will appear this summer in Columbia, Brazil, Hungary, Mexico, Montenegro, Poland, Serbia, Spain and Venezuela. For example, Spanish company Telefonica is going to sell a smartphone based on a new OS beginning from July, 2013, for the price that is under $100.

A lot of analytics think that the situation when there’re only 2-3 mobile operating systems dominating the market is not right. They say that these operating systems manufacturers dictate their requirements both to the developers and the users. Firefox is a popular browser and this fact gives a hope that Mozilla will manage to create a quality operating system that will be both popular and competitive.

Unlike iOS and Android operating systems, Firefox OS uses open standard HTML5. It means that everyone who knows web programming will be able to develop applications for this OS. All apps will be available for download from Firefox Marketplace (App Store and Google Play analogue).

Initially, devices on Mozilla platform will occupy low-cost segment of the market, and now users are offered two devices – Alcatel One Touch Fire and ZTE One.

Alcatel specifications include 3.5-inch display with 320×480 pixels resolution, 1 GHz processor, 256 Mb of RAM, 3G HSPA, GPS, Wi-Fi 802.11b/g/n, Bluetooth 3.0 interfaces and FM-radio, and 1400 mAh battery. ZTE One has basically the same characteristics though with less powerful battery (1200 mAh).
