Lenovo recently unveiled their new smartphone called the Vibe X at an event in Bangalore. It is their second big launch this year and they have been trying to change the way their products are received in the market by the rebranding. It is an impressive device and we bring you a first impression of what this new device is like. Bloggers from Bangalore were invited for the event at The Biere Club and Anuj gave us all a warm welcome. He also shared few slides on the Lenovo overall stats on Smartphones, PC and Tablets. Keith who actually talked much about the features, specifications and letting all of us hold the phone which felt like a feather. The VIBE Effect has just began.
Design
We feel that the design of this device is its most impressive aspect. While they are targeting this device on urban youth (both men and women this time), they have gone for a steel gray colour scheme instead of flashy red or yellow. The device is nice to hold and it is surprisingly light for a device this size. It weighs just 121 Gms. It is also quite slim at 6.9 mm as thin as a pencil. It is made out of plastic but the device doesn’t feel cheap at all at any cost. The back has been made to look like metal and feels like it can keep a lot of scratches away, even Anuj tried with the keys and scratch the phone on the rear end, nothing happened (Thank God). The back is rounded and so are the edges making it comfortable to hold and use. While it is all good about the design of this device, the glossy chrome lip on bottom of phone looks a bit cheap and robs it of its class. The next section will impress you a bit.
Display
The Lenovo Vibe X has got a 5 inch full HD IPS display. The resolution of 1920 x 1080 gives it a pixel density of 441 pixels per inch which is quite impressive. It gets gorilla glass 3 (not even the Nokia Lumia 1520 have gorilla glass 3) coating on top of it which would save it from a large number of scratches that you might put on the glass. Like most other IPS displays, the colours are impressive and well saturated. Even the contrast ratios are really good at medium to low brightness. The viewing angles are really good and the brightness levels are good enough to make outdoor use easy.
Hardware/Performance
The Vibe X runs a Mediatek MT6589T chipset with a quad core Cortex A7 processor running at a maximum clock speed of 1.5 GHz. It is coupled with 2 GB of RAM and a PowerVR SGX544MP2 GPU. We expected it to run a better chipset to make it a good package. There are devices running the Mediatek hardware available for below 20K. For a few more thousands over this device, you can buy the Google Nexus 5 which would blow this hardware out of steam. It has got a 13 megapixel primary camera which is just decent. There is nothing very impressive about the camera. It is slow to focus but maybe that will be fixed in the final version that hits the stores. The front camera is 5 megapixel which is more than plenty. Keith explained about 80 degree angle snap that is quite impressive. The experience of this device isn’t very smooth. We don’t know for yet if it is to be blamed on the hardware or the software of the device until we have the phone for a couple of days to do a full hands-on experience.
The battery powering all this hardware is a non-removable 2,000 mAh battery. We are okay with the non-removable bit but 2,000 mAh is just not enough. Keeping the weight down is good, but not at the cost of battery size. IPS displays are hungry and imagine what a full HD display would do to the battery.
Software/Interface
The phone runs android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean which is old already as we had 4.3 and 4.4 after that. They have heavily customized the interface and the modified interface largely looks like what you see on MIUI ROMs. It is highly customizable and there is an inbuilt theme manager which lets you customize the interface. They have developed their own theme manager for this device. Also there are some apps that come pre-installed on this device. They would help you share, backup or restore and secure your device. As we said already, there are a few lags but expect them to be ironed out when the device hits the stores. Few Apps like SECUREit and SHAREit Apps are quite interesting.
Verdict
Overall this seems to be a decent device for someone looking for a mid-range device that looks upmarket but there are a few flaws. First they have gone for a really small battery, second they ship it with an older version of android and the last one is Mediatek chipset. The device would be available for 25,999 which puts it just 3K below the Google Nexus 5. I guess you know what we mean here. We would have been happier if it was priced around 20K.
