Certain areas of Rakhine’s major town of Sittwe, almost entirely Muslim areas, have reportedly been completely destroyed.
Homes of the Muslim minority have also been torched and destroyed by security forces.
An area in Sittwe, which used to have a population of 60,000 Muslims, is also now reportedly completely destroyed.
Rohingyas at refugee camps say that security forces and extremist Rakhine residents have been working together.
Others say attempts were made to burn down one of their mosques. Those trying to protect their property were then shot at.
This is while the Rakhine population is not one known to carry guns, suggesting that police forces and the army are responsible for such acts of violence.
The Rohingya hold the Myanmar government responsible for the crimes carried out against them.
Reports say some 650 Rohingyas have been killed and thousands more displaced in recent months.
Myanmar President Thein Sein said on July 19 that the “only solution” to the plight of the Rohingya Muslims is to send the nearly-one-million-strong community to refugee camps run by the UN High Commissioner for Refugees. “We will send them away if any third country would accept them,” he added. “This is what we are thinking is the solution to the issue.”
Myanmar refuses to recognize Rohingyas as Myanmarese citizens and classifies them as illegal migrants, although the Rohingyas have resided in the country for centuries.
