Islamic State Beheads Top Archaeologist, Hangs His Body from Archaeological Site’s Main Square
A prominent antiquities scholar is decapitated by the terror group and his body tied to a Roman column in the ancient town.
A leading Syrian archaeologist held hostage by Islamic State militants has been beheaded by his captors and his body strung his body on one of the columns he renovated in the centre of the square. The Islamic State has executed the renowned antiquities expert, 81-year-old Khaled al-Asaad, because he wouldn’t reveal the location of some of Palmyra’s treasures. Dozens of people gathered to witness the killing.
Mr Asaad had been in charge of Palmyra’s archaeological site for four decades until he retired in 2003 when he then worked in the Antiquities and Museums Department.
After his beheading, his body was hung from one of the town’s Roman columns, according to state media agency SANA and the UK-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights. If the Islamic State is not Islamic, what is it? Devout Muslims in ISIS, Boko Haram, Hamas, Al-Shabaab, MILF, Islamic Jihad and thousands of other Islamic groups are waging a bloody holy war in the cause of Allah to impose Islam on the world. That is the objective of all of the Muslim groups.
