Appearing in Sydney, Australia, for his latest gun-toting action film, Jason Bourne, Damon praised Australia’s gun ban and said he wishes the U.S. would follow the Aussies’ lead.
According to Stuff, Damon said, “You guys did it here in one fell swoop and I wish that could happen in my country, but it’s such a personal issue for people that we cannot talk about it sensibly. We just can’t.”
He went on to lament that mass shootings in gun-free zones have not resulted in more gun control, saying, “Obviously mass shootings aren’t going to do it. There have been so many of them at this point. Sandy Hook, when those children were murdered, if that didn’t do it, you know, I just don’t know. Maybe we just need to evolve further before we can have that conversation, I don’t know.”
You will notice that the president doesn’t exactly spell out what following Australia’s model would entail. He speaks instead of “commonsense gun-control legislation,” “closing the gun-show loophole,” and “universal background checks.”
Damon praised the Australia gun ban as “sensible,” adding, “I wish we could be sensible like that but I don’t think that’s going to happen in my lifetime.”
Gun-toting action star Liam Neeson lambasted U.S. gun laws similarly in September 2014 by praising Britain’s handgun ban and making clear he “is totally for gun control in the US.” Following the January 2015 terror attack against Charlie Hebdo headquarters in Paris, Neeson called U.S. gun ownership “a [bleeping] disgrace.” source
