(Before It's News)

Barrick Gold’s Cortez mine in Eastern Nevada has been in operation since 1862 and is the second largest gold mine in the world.

Did you know two of the world’s largest gold mines are in the U.S.? Barrick Gold’s Cortez and Goldstrike mines sit on the Carlin trend in Eastern Nevada. Cortez produced 1,421,000 ounces in 2011 and Goldstrike wasn’t far behind with 1,088,000 ounces. Both mines include underground and open pit operations. Cortez has been an operating mine since 1862. That’s 150 years of gold mining!

The U.S. is the third most mineral wealthy country in the world, yet we are tied in last place with Papua New Guinea for the length of time it takes to permit a mine. Shouldn’t we be mining more in the U.S. instead of depending on foreign countries for 18 strategic & critical minerals? We have the natural resources, let’s use them to benefit our people, economy and national security.
