Dissension over Banking Union, Weak IFO Index Released

You can probably tell who is most worried about the exposure of their banks to dodgy debts by the speed with which they want to see the proposed European ‘banking union’ established. Germany prefers a deliberate ‘step by step’ approach, while France wants things to proceed ‘as fast as possible’.

From the point of view of citizens the unseemly French haste has to be viewed with some apprehension. Actually, it slightly depends on where said citizens reside. After all, ‘banking union’ means that all tax payers become equally involved in keeping the banks afloat, regardless of where in the euro area they are.
