Labi Siffre might have attended a Catholic School, but it was jazz and blues records which handed him true education: musicians like Thelonius Monk, Miles Davis and Charles Mingus, as well as Jimmy Reed and Wes Montgomery. Siffre was openly gay, and became a legally recognized couple under the Civil Partnership Act 2004. The irony is this is that Siffre’s song, “I Got The”, was sampled by Dr. Dre on Eminem’s “My Name Is.” Throughout his career, Eminem was derided for perceived homophobia.
Siffre moved to LA in 1977 and decided to quit the music business as a performer and concentrate solely on writing. The UK born poet and musician moved back to the UK after nine months in California. Both Dr. Dre and Kanye West have sampled Siffre’s music.
In his writing, Siffre was anti-racism, anti-homophobia, and pro-secularism. He once came out of self-imposed retirement, in 1985, to pen an anti-apartheid song.
