Neil Irwin, who writes for the Washington Post, kicked off a flurry of prognostication Tuesday on the key question of who will be the next Federal Reserve chairman. The term of the current occupant, Ben Bernanke, expires next year, and comments Bernanke has made suggest he’s not terribly interested in getting nominated by President Barack Obama to serve a third term.

Irwin cleverly set out his odds for possible top central banker, a ploy that should have economists flocking to respond. (Economists can’t seem to get enough of odds-making.)

So far the conventional wisdom candidate, Fed Vice Chairman Janet Yellen, is way ahead of the pack.
