[...] In 2008 I was literally shocked when a teenager I knew stated, “I hate Bush.” Knowing his parents well I realized his statement could not have emanated from them and I suspected its source was from one of his classmates, likely something they had heard from their own parents. “David, that’s a horrible thing to say! Why would you say that? You can dislike a person because of what he represents but should never hate the person.” His silence, at least to me, confirmed that his three recited words were not the result of any logical reasoning, but a repeat of another perhaps someone he wanted to impress by parroting that person’s words.
My understanding of the principles embodied in our Judeo-Christian heritage and those prevalent in our American society is that we should never hate anyone. Hatred never contributes any good to society. Hatred and apathy are the antithesis of the love in our religion and of our U.S. Constitution’s guarantee to our right to speak freely in opposition to the views and policies of anyone, including our elected officials. That is or should be America.
