from Bill Still
I just can’t get over the unfairness of two instances during the FoxNews Debate last Friday; 1. The first question when Donald Trump was forced to make a spectacle by raising his hand right out of the box.
Although the question was certainly relevant, the manner in which it was done was deliberately designed to put Trump in the worst light possible. Questioner Bret Baier knew that only Trump would be embarrassed. He knew that none of the others had any possibility of raising their hands.
The lesson for Fox and other debate moderators going forwards is this: If the setup question is so unfair, the audience sees thru it immediately and ends up sympathizing with the victim. More subtle is more better – for both sides.
The correct way to ask the question would have been during the normal questioning period – not a 3rd grade show of hands gotcha.
The other question was Megyn Kelly’s Rosie ODonnell question. Very personal and THE most vulgar question ever asked during a televised presidential debate.
However next time, the Donald will be armed with the following best response to a gotcha question in presidential debate history.
It was 3 and a half years ago, the eve of the South Carolina primary. CNN Debate anchor John King’s first question as he walked on stage was aimed to knock Newt Gingrich out of the election.
“Your ex-wide says that in 1999 you came to her and asked her while having an affair to enter into an open marriage.
And the rest is television history.

I like Bret Baier and Megyn Kelly, however, for these two questions – the way they did them – puts them in the TV journalist Hall of Shame in perpetuity.
I’m still reporting from Washington. Good day.
