Be prepared for the next great transfer of wealth. Buy physical silver and storable food.

So the FBI wants a custom firmware load that will allow:
This then means the FBI can attempt to “brute force” the password using a computer over the USB interface and, they demanded, any other means such as Wifi, cellular or Bluetooth!
The latter would mean that for the future they would not even have to physically posses the device. That’s right — they could hack it any time they wanted, from anywhere, at any time.
Currently the firmware update model for all modern devices makes this sort of demand possible to comply with. That is, at present you can (and do) get a software update for the operating system on your phone and when you accept it all your data is preserved. This means that if the manufacturer cooperates with such a request the contractual agreement they entered into with you, including the auto-wipe security feature, can be disabled unilaterally by them.
You should not, as a user, accept this because once this tool exists and anyone has it or can build it then it exists for anyone who manages to get their hands on it. Once it exists it will never, ever go away and eventually someone who shouldn’t have it will obtain it and use it. Worse, the risk goes up exponentially if it can be used “over the air” without physical possession of the device.
Note that if you are using something like Apple Pay, or if you have any sort of banking or other financial information on your device, and most people do, the presence of such a tool immediately renders all of that data able to be compromised. Apple Pay is not secure and neither is any other service, ever, if such a capability is implemented irrespective of the reason it is done or at who’s behest it is done, whether or not the intent and desire in the instant moment is for “good cause” or not.
