(Before It's News)

As ‘they’ say, everything we need to know, we learn in kindergarten; and that goes for our sense of self. However, that set of skills is rapidly becoming obsolete.

Take hearing, for instance. What do we really need our ears for? Well to begin with, they make great rests for sunglasses, and are fairly reliable when it comes to listening to music or someone speak; yet, what purpose does this sense actually serve? Between all the flashing lights, LOUDNESS and vibrating mechanisms, hearing is something we no longer treasure. There is no benefit to all the noise!

What about touch, taste, sight or smell? What role do these senses play in our ability to survive, let alone thrive? Let’s face it, our very basic human instincts are being replaced with the influx of innovation. Although, many don’t see the problems and ask, ‘What’s wrong? Technology is awesome!’

While, it may be great for some things i.e. healthcare and communication, it’s not so great for our daily activities. We’ve become OVER sensitized and are quickly shutting down (out of protection) and relying heavily on technology to warn and inform …. the purpose of the original five senses. (I say ‘original’ because intuition does fall into our ability to survive as well as thrive.)

To put it simply, we knew what we needed, when we needed it. We were aware of our surroundings and how to remain safe. We knew who was kind and who or what was a threat. The bottom line? We knew then, we don’t know so much now.

1) Sight ~ for those of us with the ability to see, we rarely take in the beauty of the day. We only see what we have to see and then numb ourselves out with computers and LARGE television monitors. There is so much ‘wrong’ with the world that we strive to tune it out; yet in doing so, we deny ourselves an opportunity to delight in what’s right and beautiful i.e. our partner or child; missing the chance to honor and physically experience gratitude.

2) Hearing ~ we are surrounded by sound. So much so, that we miss the laughter, the breeze, footsteps, or even the sound of rain. Now, someone may say, I’m mistaken when it comes to these sounds; however, I beg to differ. We may hear, but do we listen? When we listen intently, we’re able to discern between danger and beauty. Deliberately listening to the soft and enjoyable sounds reduces stress and restores peace so that when it’s time to be alarmed, we really know.

3) Taste ~ fast food means fast eating. More and more of us no longer cook and eat as quickly as we can push a button. Unfortunately, neglecting the flavor, disconnects us from what our bodies do and do not like. We no longer eat with intent; we eat to fill a gap or kill the pain. My question is what pain are we really trying to quiet? Life is delicious and when partnered with our intuition, our sense of taste tells us EXACTLY what we need to be feeding the body.

4) Touch ~ I don’t know how many people actually pay attention to how things feel. I enjoy softness, the feel of an embrace or the sun on my face. The next time you cry, feel the tears and know they are cleansing your soul. Touch is magical and has the ability to soothe. Again, this sense works synergistically with intuition and when we know what touch we need, we are honoring our heart’s desire.

5) Smell ~ the only sense directly linked to the brain AND a major connection to all that our body needs. Scents that smell yummy are good for the body. Notice how you feel the next time you smell something foul versus delicious. Pay attention to the sensations in a dental office. These are all communications from your body asking you to connect … your task is to simply love, honor and obey.
