(Before It's News)

When most people think about service, they tend to think about building homes for the poor, working in a soup kitchen, or traveling to Africa to dig wells, etc. However, you don’t have to take such big leaps in order to serve, there is plenty that you can do close to home that keep the community green. Read on for 10 ways that you can serve your immediate social circle.

Make a Treat

One of the easiest things you can do is make a little treat for a friend and deliver it to them. If you don’t have any homemaking skills, you can pick something up from the store and bring it to them on your way home. It’s a quick and easy way let someone know that you care.

Sit and Chat

Due to our technical world, we often fail to have real, personal, human interactions with our friends and family. We are too busy texting, reading posts from our “friends” on Facebook, and playing games with people that we have never met to actually talk to those who are in the room with us. One way that you can serve your friends and family is by putting down your phone and interacting with them directly. Really listen to them when they speak, and ask meaningful questions. If you can’t visit with them in person, call them on the phone and ask them how they are.

Ask Your Coworkers About Their Weekend

Show your coworkers that you care about them by asking them about how their weekend was, or how their day went. Listen for their response. It may take a few minutes away from what you were working on, but those few minutes might be worth the world to them.

Write a Thank You Note

Writing a thank you note is an easy way to let your friends and family know that you appreciate them. You don’t have to give them a note after they’ve done something specific, it is sometimes better to give it to them for no reason at all. If you’re not one for words, draw them a picture or give them a special gift.

Pay For Someone’s Lunch

You can serve someone that you don’t know by paying for their lunch. The easiest way to do this is when you’re in a drive through. When you get up to the window, let them know that you would like to pay for the next person in line. They will bill it to your card, and then let the next person know that their food has been paid for. It is a great way to make someone’s day.

Charge Their Phone

If you notice that someone’s phone is nearly dead, pull out a charger and plug it in. While it seems like a small gesture, it is enough to bring a smile to someone’s face. You don’t have to carry a universal charger around with you, just whip it out when it’s convenient.

Compliment Someone

If a coworker or friend looks especially nice some day, let them know. If they do a good job on something, tell them! There is no shame in being proud of your friends and family.

Show Up

Sometimes, our friends and family members try something new like acting in a play or starting a band. If they invite you to a gig they are playing at, go! Let them know that you care about them and support their dreams. It probably took a lot of courage to invite you, so let them know that you appreciate it by attending. If nothing else, you’ll get a good laugh.

Smile

A smile goes a long way, especially if someone is having a rough day. Don’t be afraid to share a smile, a joke, or a funny meme that you found on the internet. Smiling can help decrease stress levels, release endorphins, and make you more attractive even. Smiling is very contagious, so if you smile at a friend, they will smile back.

Don’t Gossip

Refusing to gossip is a small but wonderful way to serve those around you. If someone starts talking bad about others, change the topic. While avoiding gossip isn’t normally what people think of when they think of service, it is a valuable service to perform.

As stated in this blog, service can improve your physical and mental health, and those benefits can be realized even by serving even your friends and family
