Do you have a raised bed? Are you ready to build one? This article will explain to you the 7 benefits to growing in a raised bed!
1. Pick your own soil – You have your own personal choice in your soil composition. Do you want high organic matter? Or would you prefer high sand, clay, or silt content? Certain plants prefer different soils!
2. Increased Air Flow – Every inch above ground you have your plants helps reduce powdery mildews, blights and even funguses.
3. Increased Drainage – The better your soil is at draining, the better most plants will be. Almost all plants expect a dry period of some sort, and will do better in conditions that have changing moisture.
4. Crop Rotation – Raised beds allow you to rotate crops much easier, placing each crop in an identifiable spot. With raised beds it would be very difficult to accidentally place tomatoes in the same place that tomatoes were last year!
5. Soil Quality – You pick the best soil. In addition to this, you can prevent caked soil, or soil which has created a hard impermeable layer on the top. Raised beds reduce caked soil since people are not walking on, or driving machines, like tillers, over the neighboring soil. Roots need oxygen, and caked soil reduces air flow through the soil.
6. Raised Beds Require Less Bending Over – Bending over can break your back! This is critically important, especially for older folks. Plant your garden in raised beds to reduce your need to bend over throughout the year, saving you time and money at the doctor/hospital.
7. Extend Growing Season – You can extend your growing season about 3-5 weeks. Raised beds thaw earlier in the spring season, and freeze late in the fall season. Your plants will get extra time to grow compared to normal plants that are grown in the ground!
The time is now to build your own garden and raised bed. Every fruit you produce is a fruit that was not taxed by the farmer, not taxed by the shipper and not taxed by the consumer!
I sincerely hope you enjoy eating your hard-earned labor!
