Five Years After the BP Oil Disaster: A Barrier Island for Nesting Birds Devoid of Life. Five and a half acres of ideal bird nesting habitat was destroyed when Cat Island became “ground zero” for the Gulf oil spill. BP doesn’t feel obligated to repair the damage done.
