Brazil: Farmers sued Monsanto for excessive royalty tax on its GMO seeds and won a judgment for $2 billion. Brazil’s Supreme Court declared that the decision should apply to all farmers, not just those in the suit, which could cost Monsanto $7.5 billion. [The underlying problem is that GMOs were illegal until 2005, but the seeds were smuggled in. Up to 75% of the crops are from smuggled seeds.]
