n/a Why Get a Second Opinion
When it comes to our health, all we can do is follow our doctors’ advice and hope for the best, right? Most people don’t have the education or experience to even come close to questioning our doctors’ educated guidance, and it can also seem impolite to question their reasoning or ask for a second opinion.
This can, however, lead many patients to pay for care that they don’t feel thoroughly addresses their health concerns, or worse, disregards them completely. Not to mention our financial concerns when seeking medical care. But, we, as consumers and patients, do have the power to get exactly what we want out of our medical visits. This includes seeking out a second opinion.
While you may feel like you are cheating on your long-time general physician by reaching out for a second opinion, it is not as uncommon as you may think. In fact, it may be the only way to thoroughly safeguard your personal health and your pocketbook at the same time. Read on for the top reasons why you should never think twice about asking around:
1. Everyone makes mistakes.
Even trained medical professionals are allowed to make mistakes. Doctors are really no different from you and me. They went to school to get a degree, have to come in to work every day at a specific time, hope to get their work finished efficiently so they can head home to their families, and then repeat the same thing when the next day rolls around. Even though doctors can sometimes seem superhuman, we all have to remember that this is their job.
Just like you can make mistakes occasionally in your profession, doctors can also have off days. While this is no excuse for mistreatment or a misdiagnosis that leads to more problems instead of better health, you should never feel bad about getting a second opinion if you feel your doctor has missed a step. It is in the best interest of your health and your pocketbook to get a second opinion and avoid extra and unnecessary medical treatment and billing down the line.
2. You know your body best.
Even though your doctors are the experts, no one can feel and sense what’s going on inside your own body better than you. When you feel like there is something wrong, it’s always best to get your health checked out, even if it feels silly. And, if your doctor does an evaluation and finds nothing amiss, you should never disregard your feelings if you still sense that something is off.
This is one of the most important times to get a second opinion. Sometimes, a different professional will naturally look at the issue from a different angle and find things that the first doctor did not. The next time you feel like something is wrong with your health, and your doctor brushes it off, don’t hesitate to get a second opinion.
3. Medicine is a for-profit business.
As much as we would like to think that our doctors have nothing more than our medical costs and general health in mind when they make treatment decisions, this is realistically not always the case. Doctors and hospitals need to make a profit in order to function. Not only that, any professional wants to make as much money as they can in the time they spend at their jobs; doctors are no different.
Even though there are plenty of medical providers who work on a non-profit basis, the majority of doctors operate on a for-profit basis. Some have relationships with drug companies or medical supply companies, and they provide care and give prescriptions to further those relationships. Never assume that your doctor is putting your wallet before his own, and never hesitate to change doctors or get a second opinion when you feel your care is being compromised for the sake of profit.
