Health Benefits
1. Memory ability and histopathological changes
In the study of four groups of 1-mo-old male senescence-accelerated mice (SAMP8) fed Polygonum multiflorum Thunb. (PM) extract for 18 wk to determine the effect of PM on memory ability and histopathological changes, found that the 50% ethanol PM extract group showed significantly lower total cholesterol and triglyceride values than the other groups, but the HDL cholesterol level was the same. These results suggest that dietary supplementation with either ethanol or water extracts can reduce brain pathological changes and promote learning and memory ability(1).

2. Cognitive performance

In the study to investigate the effects of Polygonum multflorum (PM) Thunb. on the learning and memory ability in one and seven-month-old male senescence accelerated mice (SAMP8), showed that supplement of the PM extracts could improve the learning and memory ability and reduce the brain pathological changes in mice. This might be due to the antioxidant phytochemicals of the PM extracts(2).

3. Neurodegenerative disease
In the study to evaluate the protective effect of 2,3,5,4′-tetrahydr- oxystilbene-2-O-β-D-glucoside (TSG)against 6-hydroxydopamine-induced apoptosis in rat adrenal pheochromocytoma PC12 cells and the possible mechanisms, at the Fourth Military Medical University, indicated that TSG may be effective in providing protection against neurodegenerative diseases associated with oxidative stress(3).

4. Breast cancer
In the study to to evaluate the inhibitory effect of PM extract (PME) on the proliferation of MCF-7 cells and to investigate the underlying mechanisms, showed that the effects of PME on MCF-7 cells were associated with the modulation of the expression levels of proteins involved in the cell cycle and apoptosis. These data suggest that PME has promise as a treatment against breast cancer by inhibiting the proliferation of cancer cells(4).

5. Etc.
