Phyllanthus niruri, Linn. (Kizha nelli in Tamil and Bahupatra and Bhumyamlaki in Sanskrit) was found that the increased deposition of triglyceride, cholesterol and phospholipid found in the liver, brain, kidney and heart due to ethanol administration were brought back towards the normal values on the administration of the herbal powder, however, in the intestine and stomach the increased ATPase activity observed due to alcohol ingestion, was only partially reduced(1).

2. Hepatoprotective effect
the study of Hepatoprotective effect of poly herbal formulation against various hepatotoxic agent at the
Patel institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research, indicated that administration of PHF (100 and 200 mg/kg p.o.) significantly inhibited paracetamol, CCl(4) and ethanol-induced elevation levels of SGPT, SGOT, ALP, DB and LDH. A comparative histopathological study of liver exhibited almost normal architecture as compared to toxicant group(2).

3. Antibacterial activity
in the study of  the antibiotic resistance of organisms isolated from urinary tract infected patients was evaluated using the National Committee for Clinical Laboratory Standards (NCCLS) method and Multiple Antibiotic Resistance (MAR) index values, found that  Azadiracta indica A. Juss., Tinospora cordifolia (Wild.) and Euphorbia hirta Linn. exhibited high inhibitory activity against most of the 11 tested organisms followed by Cassia javanica Linn. and Phyllanthus niruri Linn(3).

4. Antihyperuricemic effect 
Phyllanthus niruri methanol extract exhibited in vitro xanthine oxidase inhibition with an IC50 of 39.39 microg/mL and a moderate in vivo xanthine oxidase inhibitory activity. However, the lignans display poor xanthine oxidase inhibition in vitro and a relatively weak in vivo inhibitory activity at 10mg/kg(4).
