virusprotection 255x159 New SARS Like Virus Spreads in Middle EastA new virus that causes rapid kidney failure has killed one person and infected at least three more people in Saudi Arabia and Qatar, confounding experts everywhere. The respiratory illness is a new strain of the coronavirus family, to which the deadly SARS (Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome) also belongs.

About 10 years ago, SARS also caused rapid kidney failure and infected 8,422 people across the globe, killing 916 in just eight months. John Oxford, a virology professor at the University of London, says that this new virus is “more likely to join numerous other members of the coronavirus family and behave like a nasty infection.  SARS [on the other hand] was very quick off the mark infecting hospital staff.”

The World Health Organization has confirmed six cases of infection with this new respiratory virus, claiming it to be not very contagious. On Friday, however, it became clear that the two latest cases from Saudi Arabia were of the same family and epidemiologically linked, and two more (unconfirmed) cases of the same family, one member of whom has died, showed symptoms. A Qatari man sent to Germany for hospital care earlier this month has, fortunately, recovered.

“Preliminary investigations indicate that these two cases presented with similar symptoms of illness,” WHO said in a statement. “Until more information is available, it is prudent to consider that the virus is more likely widely distributed than just the two countries which have identified cases.”

Vaccine Considerations and Natural Healing

A vaccine is likely on the horizon, but there are health concerns—like increased risk of autoimmune diseases, deadly nerve diseases, worsening of symptoms, diabetes-linked inflammation, not to mention complete ineffectiveness—to consider.

A healthy immune system from a healthy diet, moderate exercise, adequate time in vitamin-D-rich sunlight, and a positive outlook is the best defense against any illness. It’s also a good idea to keep a few superfoods in store in case of shortages, Hurricane Sandy-like disasters, or worse.

  • Distilled white vinegar for cleaning and cooking
  • Apple cider vinegar for numerous health woes
  • Garlic, easily grown in any garden or pot of dirt, and a powerful boost to the immune system
  • Honey, for food, healing, and cleaning
  • Turmeric, one of our favorite anti-inflammatories and all-round superfood
  • Sea salt, for food preservation, cleaning, healing, and flavor

In addition to storing foods, here are 8 essential readiness and survival tips.
