Home of Kyle J. Norton for The Better of Living & Living Health Chlorine is an essential mineral for our body, found primarily in body fluids. The trace minerals is a prominent negatively charged ion of the blood, serving as one of the main electrolytes of the body. Together with potassium and sodium, the trace minerals regulate the body fluids through conduction of electrical impulse in ion exchange. Chloride is safely utilized by the body, without negative health effects. Side effects associated with diets high in chloride, mainly attributable to sodium and potassium, the two other electrolyte minerals.
Exposure to chlorine (Cl2) and airway injury
Exposure to chlorine (Cl2) causes airway injury, characterized by oxidative damage, an influx of inflammatory cells and airway hyperresponsiveness, researchers found that epithelial cells and alveolar macrophages from mice exposed to 800 ppm Cl2 stained for 3-nitrotyrosine residues. Inhibition of inducible nitric oxide synthase with 1400W (1 mg/kg) abrogated the Cl2-induced changes in responsiveness and concluded that chlorine exposure causes functional and pathological changes in the airways associated with oxidative stress. Inducible nitric oxide synthase is involved in the induction of changes in responsiveness to methacholine(4).
