After years of buying shampoo and conditioner off store shelves in accordance with what was on sale or whatever smells nice, I began to do a little research on the long list of ingredients featured on the label.
Discovering more about what is really in most shampoos became more than a quest – it became a downright eye-opening mission and helped me realize that shampoo is little more than a lot of “sham” with a little bit of “poo” added in.
Regardless of how pricey or salon recommended a shampoo or conditioner is, choosing a natural hair care cleanser can make a huge difference in your overall health. After all, as you rinse, these products touch most of your skin – the body’s largest organ – which absorbs many of these toxic chemicals like a sponge.
Sodium Laureth / Lauryl Sulfate is almost all shampoos bought in stores and traditional salons and is associated with probable carcinogens that can cause cancer. Coincidentally, sodium laureth sulfate is the major cleansing component in shampoos and is known to be a source of skin and eye irritation. These sulfates clean by corrosion and strip the precious natural oils and lipids from your hair, which can also lead to premature hair loss. These same sulphates are commonly used in commercial cleaning chemicals and strippers, so you can only imagine what it does to your hair.
Propylene Glycol is used in industrial antifreeze and brake fluid, and you aren’t a car!
Ammonium Chloride is highly toxic when swallowed or inhaled in excess and can irritate the eyes rather easily.
Methylchloroisothiazolinone is a preservative known to cause allergic reactions, particularly in those with sensitivities. Found in countless cosmetic and beauty products, this chemical is also correlated to immune system problems in certain populations.
Benzyl Alcohol is sourced from coal and petroleum tar whose side effects are widely recognized. And who wants to put coal or petroleum residue on their hair?
Fragrance or Parfum is a wonderful addition to hair care products, but only if they are sourced by nature. Manufactured fragrances are responsible for many skin reactions and respiratory issues.
Ethoxylated Surfactants are foaming agent and emulsifiers that produce carcinogenic chemicals during the manufacturing process.
