Researchers at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine have found that low serum vitamin D levels in the months preceding diagnosis of menopause is associated with a high risk of breast cancer.
The study included 1,200 healthy (no previous diagnosis) women in which low blood levels in the three months before diagnosis has about three times the risk of breast cancer compared to women with the highest levels of vitamin D in those tests.
The study is to be published in the Cancer Causes and Control journal. This study agrees with previous studies that have found the same low D levels resulting in higher breast cancer risks.
Principal investigator Cedric Garland, DrPH and professor in the Department of Family and Preventie Medicine at UCSD, had previously done a meta-analysis estimating that vitamin D serum levels 50 ng/ml lowers breast cancer by about fifty percent. For most people, that’s equal to consuming about 4,000 IU per day through diet and supplementation.
