The diagnosis can be set after the biopsy
“The first step is proper diagnosis which is established by biopsy. The operation to remove the tumor is essential. Other means of treatment such as electrocautery, cryotherapy, radiotherapy, immunotherapy apply in some specific situations and often completes the initial intervention. Recurrent tumors, the metastatic tumors, the spreading inoperable one or the tumors developed by the elderly are treated differently” says Dr. Nili N. Alai, MD, FAAD, CPC-D, US Board Certified Dermatologist.
Mohs technique, the best solution
Mohs surgery is by far the top procedure for skin cancers. This consists in removing layer by layer of damaged skin cancer until there is only healthy tissue left.
“This method allows you to check tumor enlargement during the intervention: the lab guides the dermatologist surgeon during surgery, mapping the roots of the tumor to the ends of its edge. Thus, it preserves healthy tissue and diseased tissue is removed, without affecting the healthy tissue. It gives the highest rate of healing to all other therapeutic means and it can be applied to various types of skin cancers. The method is very important for face and scalp tumors where you have to deal with very small and difficult areas such as the eyelids, lips, ears or nose”, explain Dr. Alai.
Currently, about 3 million people develop a form of skin cancer annually, according to World Health Organization statistics. One of the three cancers diagnosed in patients is located at skin level.
