While the media is fond of scaring the public with the issue of bee die-offs, it is not as fond of questioning its corporate sponsors in their probable role in killing pollinator populations with neonicotinoid pesticides. This class of pesticides is highly implicated in the drastic pollinator declines according to non-corporate sponsored scientists. Therefore, it is of no surprise that monolithic corporations throw money at lobbying efforts and quietly fund science in order to muddle the issue and buy themselves time from public ire.

There are still many people I talk to who do not understand the dire nature of pollinator decline. They may not have reflected on what our meals would look like without bees, nor how the whole ecosystem could be devastated by the loss. They haven’t heard that bees are responsible for one out of every three bites of food or that by simply introducing more species we could triple the yield of berries without pesticides.

What’s more, is the solutions offered do nothing about the root of the problem but instead, help raise even more profits for corporate interests – i.e., Robobee. Bayer even ridiculously offered to plant more flowers around pesticide-laden fields – which reminded me of an abusive man buying flowers for his wife who sports a black eye from his actions.

I can comment on these things day an night and people can simply scroll over the headlines. But street artist Louis Masai Michel is getting major views. That is, no one can truly walk by his activism without seeing a picture worth 1,000 words.

His campaign is called #SaveTheBees and has inspired other visionaries to collaborate with the English artivist to spread the message beyond London.

What do you think of his work?
