Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra Modi started his one-day fast on Friday 20th January in Godhra. The fast of Mr. Modi is part of a state-wide tour that he has billed his goodwill mission or “Sadbhawna”. Godhra is 26th place where he halted and began a fast. His goal is to promote communal peace and harmony.
According to the media reports, Congress leader Shankar Singh Vaghela will also sit on a counter fast to protest Modi’s in Godhra. Ahead of the fast, the police arrested activist Shabnam Hashmi and five others in the outskirts of Godhra.
Local BJP leaders expected that more than 50,000 people including the minorities will attend the event at the State Reserve Police (SRP) Ground in Panchmahal district, around 250 km from Ahmedabad. The ‘Sadbhawna Mission’ comes nearly a month before the 10th anniversary of Godhra carnage where 1200 people were killed when the S6 coach of Sabarmati Express train was burnt on 27 Feb, 2002.
Security has been tightened across Godhra. Panchmahal SP Sachin Bhadshah told, “Over 1600 policemen have been deployed along with 50 specially trained Chetak commandos and other unarmed jawans across the town. A three-layer security has also been put in place at the fast venue.”
