The anti-Kundankulam Nuclear Power Project (KKNPP) protesters withdrawn their nine-day long hunger strike on Tuesday evening, following talks with the district administration, led by Collector R Selvaraj. According to an activist, the protests against the plant will continue.
As a result of this, regulatory orders in areas adjoining Kundankulam have been lifted by the Collector. However, the protesters decided to resume the relay fast at the same venue at Idinthakarai from Wednesday until their associates were released from prison.
The orders were lifted after police and collector held talks with villagers who were assured that their demands would be considered.
Fifteen people led by the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMNE) were on indefinite fast demanding release of arrested villagers and withdrawal of cases against them. Around 200 people have been arrested and cases were filed against more than thousand.
The leader of the People’s Movement Against Nuclear Energy (PMNE), M. Pushparayan told, “We have called off only the indefinite fast. The relay fast by villagers will continue.”
The condition of 5 people including Udhayakumar has worsened and doctors had advised shifting them to a hospital.
