Summer vacation is here and so are endless options for you to help you keep your sanity intact. You can try Yoga, some meditation classes, Reiki, or there’s the good old morning walk that you can extend for as long as you want. Sounding a little abrupt, am I? What does summer vacation have to do with stress beating options? Well, my contemporaries who have kids will know exactly what I am talking about. It’s that time of the year that is the ultimate test of your patience. How long can you hold down your anger before it erupts like a volcano that gorges everything that lies in its wake?
With kids running wild around the house you are sure to lose it at some point of time. I am stating the plural here because that’s my situation. However, mothers with one kids know it’s no different for them either. They are little bundles of energy and need to be channelized into the right direction. For a change I actually have a plan this vacation. It’s a game called “What are we creating today”. And I plan on playing this game every single day and coming out a winner at the end of the day.
It’s pretty simple actually. When it’s too sunny to go out, and the idiot box has just about exhausted its faculties and yours, this game is the best and the simplest option. Get kids busy with something creative. Being a mother teaches you something new every day. So, why not spend this summer vacation actually learning how to effectively be in the same house as your kids the whole time and not go insane! There are options available these days where you can get such games online. Actually these are more of activity kits and less of a game. But, the whole thrill lies in the feeling of achievement.
The simplest activity for toddlers would be stencils. You can get stencils with the very basic alphabets or numbers. There are also variants available depicting animals and fairy tale characters. These are the ones that are most fun to work with. The little ones can move their pencils through the grooves and staring back at them would be a perfect Tinker Bell or a Dinosaur. The best part is, they are completely mess free. All you need is a paper and pencil, and you have given the freedom to your child to create something beautiful. However, if you want a real stress free situation you have to stop caring about the mess. After all, any mess can be cleaned up with a mop and some water.
Jigsaws with multiple puzzles around the same character is another fun option you can try. Especially for the little ones again (they are the ones who really need your patience). The act of separating the pieces will be a game in itself. Once the pieces have been separated the kids can complete the puzzles by themselves. It’s a delight to see how they figure out the puzzle and put the pieces together. Not only will the picture look beautiful, you have also helped your kid achieve something. On other days you could just depend on a box of paints. It doesn’t have to be structured painting all the time. The kids can just dip their hands in paint and do a hand prints painting. Don’t look at the mess. They have more fun that way.
There are so many things you can create every day. So I suggest, switch off the idiot box and look at this vacation as an opportunity to spend some quality time with the kids. Whatever you do, you won’t lose your sanity. Also don’t forget to wind up the day with a favorite bed time story.
