For some weird and hard to explain reason, that was my first thought this Friday morning: that I had to go for a swim in the sea. The sky was promising: no cloud around, bright shining sun. However the air temperature was not exactly swim friendly at this time of the year: 16 degrees Celsius at 9 o clock in the morning. Really chilly. “A sun with biting teeth” as we say in Greek.
I thought that it will get at least five degrees warmer at noon. Certainly a challenge for somebody like me who has decided to keep swimming in the sea as season-late as possible for the first time in my life.
A chance to get rid of the triste rain during the last days.
So I sent an sms to a friend whom I have convinced we should keep swimming even in late autumn. I couldn’t tell her “It’s warm” or ” PUH! so hot” as I did in the past. So I sms-ed he “There is sun”
Half an hour later she called me saying “Oh you don’t give up”. I agreed and there we were at one of Athens beaches short after one clock.
The first step was the toughest: Really crystal cold. A slight chilly wind blowing.

I’m not the type of swimmer that stands half an hour in the water till body adjusts to water temperature. I simply jump in.
But today was different. I stood with the ankles in the clear cold water. For one whole minute. Then the big splash! And quick movements to get …warm. After the first ten minutes, I had overcome that what I thought it would be an ice-cold shock.
Refreshing water. Sun. A wonderful smell of the sea. Just beautiful.
My friend and me swam for a whole hour. The more, we swam the more pleasant the swimming became. We would have swam even longer, if some kids were not waiting at home.
Certainly, the biggest challenge is when you come out of the water. Last Saturday, we were shivering, because we were late and the sun was almost sinking in the sea when we came out of water. Today, we went earlier. With time, we learn…

Since a couple of weeks, every time we go for a swim, we say “Oh, that’s the last swim of the year”. And every time, it turns it was the one before the last one.
However, we are not entitled to be called “winter swimmers” yet. It’s still November and winter begins in December.
Hopefully today’s swim wasn’t the last one
PS I thought to post about something more relaxed for a change. Something different than the usual Greek crisis, Greek bankruptcy, Greek bailout tranche, Greek suicide…
The nice little moments have become so rare in our lives lately..
