The workers have been occupying the building since 72 days hindering the garbage collection. The workers, employees of a private cleaning service contractor assigned by the Aristotelio University, have been protesting outstanding salary payments. The cleaners demanded also that the university rector should cancel the contract with the contractor.

The occupation and suspension of cleaning services have turned the university premises “into a ‘health bomb’ with mountains of garbage, loathsome odors and rats wandering around”, so Greek media.

Police Operation occurred after the rector of Aristotelio University asked the intervention of prosecutor.

The occupiers had found supporters among several students’ groups.

The detainees are due to appear in court on Friday. Colleagues and student groups have gathered outside the court to express support.
