DEBKAfile was founded by a team of journalists in June 2000 as an independent Internet Web site, providing an intelligence and security news service. March 22, 2017, 12:40 PM (IDT)
A ceremony was held Wednesday at the international airport in Brussels in memory of those who died in a coordinated terrorist attack by ISIS a year earlier. Belgium's Prime Minister Charles Michel, King Philippe and Queen Mathilde, as well as other public figures and the families of the victims were in attendance. Thirty-two people were killed and dozens of others were wounded in the March 22 attacks on Zaventem airport and a metro station.
Despite the arrests of dozens of ISIS followers in the aftermath of the assault, the case has not been solved so the investigation by the Belgium Police continues. The city remains under a terror alert and has yet to return to normal, with the heavily-Muslim neighborhood of Molenbeek still almost inaccessible to local law enforcement, intelligence and security authorities. Belgian intelligence services are concerned about the possibility of thousands of ISIS fighters returning to the country from the Middle East. About 400 young Muslims from Molenbeek alone have joined ISIS in Syria and Iraq.
Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
