Numerous sardines came into Urakawa-ko port of Hokkaido from afternoon of 11/5/2014 and the dead bodies surfaced in the port by 1AM of 11/6/2014.
The sardines are 20cm long. Urakawa-machi local government estimates it was 100 t in total.
The same phenomenon was observed in Mukawa-cho 3 days ago, where is 80km from this town. According to the local newspaper, numerous sardines have been washed ashore in several other places along the Pacific coastal area of Hokkaido since 11/3/2014 too.
National Research Institute of Fisheries Science, Fisheries Research Agency comments cold sea water was stirred by the storm of 11/3 ~ 11/5/2014 so the sardines moved to the shallow area to die owing to the deficiency of oxygen in the water.
However local fisherman states he has been living for 60 years but he has never seen such a thing.
Large number of marine organism deaths can be seen before a major earthquake sometimes.
